Local Chat And Global Instant Messaging |
 |
In Second Life, there are totally two primary ways of text-based communication between the residents which are local chat, and global instant messaging (also known as IM ).
These two methods are being widely used in SL to allow SL residents to have a convenient communication among themselves throughout the game world. Local Chatting is mainly used by between two or more avatars to have public localised conversations and can be "heard" within 20 m.
Avatars can also shout (audible within 100 m) and whisper (audible within 10 m). Global instant messaging (IM) is primarily used for private conversations, both between two avatars, and between the members of a group.
However, IM communication differs from Local Chatting in that this way of communication does not depend on the participants within a certain distance of each other.
