Scripting is certainly another type of skilled job which does not require any external tool to produce its items in the game. In SL, scripting is much like a built-in computer language which is needed by professional programmers to make their works.
Linden Scripting Language (aka LSL) is a built-in language, used to "program" all objects to make them react to and interact with avatars in the game. Scripting is just another computer language to be learnt so it is not hard for professional programmers.
In other words, this skilled job is comparatively easy to learn and master by oneself. However, unlike other jobs, you cannot sell scripts directly, but you sell mostly scripted objects.
Due to this, many scripters partner up either with architects or object builders, and split the profits from scripted objects. It is also possible for you to get hired to be a free-lancer in a big project If you can succeed in selling some good scripted objects.
One thing to remember, a vast majority of SL's population are professional programmers in RL, making this job very highly competitive from start to end.
